Impact of the Barton Health Foundation
Your gifts to the Barton Health Foundation make a lasting impact on the health of those in our community. Below are a few examples of some the great work that has been done thanks to the generosity of our donors. Together we are making a difference!
Family Birthing Center
Over the years, the Barton Health Foundation has continuously helped upgrade Barton Health’s Family Birthing Center. With an average of 300 babies born at Barton Health each year, the need for leading-edge medical equipment and staff training is vitally important. In 2019, the Barton Health Foundation Gala raised over $90,000 with an important goal in mind – to keep mothers and newborns together at Barton Health. Through the purchase of medical equipment, such as a new ultrasound machine; specialized feeding tubes and infant IV equipment; funding continuing education for nurses with a focus on care for high-risk mothers and babies; and providing 24-7 access to lactation specialists for new moms, philanthropic support from the Barton Health Foundation positively impacts mothers, newborns and families in our Lake Tahoe community.
Robert Maloff Center
This state-of-the-art, 26,000 sq. ft. Barton Center for Orthopedics and Wellness was made possible by a $10 million gift from Lisa Maloff, in memory of her husband Robert, and a $1 million gift from the late Dr. Paul Fry, II.
With prevention and education at Barton Health’s core, the Robert Maloff Center enhances the health of our community by introducing an innovative and proactive healthcare model. The Robert Maloff Center blends renowned orthopedics and rehabilitation, a performance-based sports training program and integrative wellness all under one roof.
Barton Community Health Center
Through philanthropic assistance from the Barton Health Foundation, The Barton Community Health Center expansion allows Barton Health to better meet the health care demands of our ever-growing community. The Barton Community Health Center expansion included the construction of 10 additional patient examination rooms, a larger lab space, and an expanded waiting room.
The upgraded facility allows for a comfortable patient experience and a more efficient patient flow, allowing physicians and clinicians to treat more patients each day. The Barton Community Health Center plays an important role in our community, as uninsured or unemployed individuals may obtain needed health care for themselves and their families at greatly reduced costs.
Helipad
In October 2001, the Barton Health Foundation provided over $1 million to establish a helipad at the hospital. Prior to completing the construction, helicopters had to land in the parking lot area behind the hospital which was precarious at best. In order to land, traffic had to be halted, adding precious minutes to the transport time.
Level III Trauma Center
The Barton Health Foundation provided philanthropic support that assisted Barton Health’s transformation to a Level III Trauma Center. Barton Health was designated a Level III Trauma Center by El Dorado County, CA., and is the only trauma center in the Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Carson Valley region. The Level III Trauma Center designation recognizes Barton Health as a critical access point where patients receive an increase in the overall depth and speed of care.
Barton Health’s Emergency Department averages over 20,000 patient visits a year; one-third of these visits are traumatic injuries. When a patient experiences a trauma, the first hour is crucial – it is often the difference between life and death.
In an emergency, Barton Health receives a call from our partners in the field “activating” the trauma team. Every member – ED doctors, surgeons, nurses, lab and x-ray technicians, has less than 15 minutes to respond. In simple terms, this program saves lives and keeps more of our patients here so their family can be with them during a traumatic event. Ongoing technology updates, training for ED and Trauma staff, equipment, and other emergency care needs are covered by this fund managed by the Barton Health Foundation.
